Course Description

How to use Medication appropriately to support health and well-being of the individual living with dementia.
 
Staff attending this course should already have good knowledge and safe working practice of medication and undertaken medication training. Underpinning knowledge can be obtained from our Medication Administration for Care Staff here.
 
This course is presented by Sylvia Wilson, a qualified Pharmacist and trainer with over 15 years experience. 

Course Topics

  • Medicines used to treat the symptoms of dementia
  • Risks and benefits of using anti-psychotics, anti-depressants
  • Risks and benefits of using anxiolytics, anticonvulsants and cognitive enhancers
  • Issues around polypharmacy for people with dementia
  • Recording and reporting side effects and/or adverse reactions to medication
  • Administer and review medication safely and appropriately
  • Consultation with people affected by dementia
